Food insecurity affects millions of people across the U.S., but transgender individuals face disproportionate challenges in accessing nutritious food. A 2021 study by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law found that transgender adults are three times more likely to experience food insecurity than cisgender adults.

Why Are Transgender Individuals More at Risk?

Several factors contribute to this disparity:

  • Employment Discrimination & Economic Hardship – Many transgender individuals face barriers to stable employment, reducing their financial ability to afford food.

  • Healthcare Barriers & Mental Health Struggles – Lack of access to affirming healthcare can compound financial strain and food insecurity.

  • Discrimination in Food Assistance Programs – Some transgender individuals face stigma when seeking support, making them less likely to access essential resources like food pantries or SNAP benefits.

How Can We Help?

At the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, we believe that everyone deserves access to nutritious food in a welcoming and affirming space. By supporting inclusive food programs, advocating for equitable policies, and fostering safe spaces, we can work toward a future where no one has to choose between being themselves and meeting their basic needs.

This #TransgenderDayOfVisibility, and every day, we stand with our transgender neighbors in the fight against hunger. Together, we can ensure that food security is a right, not a privilege.
