Thanksgiving is almost here—a time to gather with family and friends, share gratitude, and enjoy delicious food. As you prepare your holiday feast, ensuring the safety of your loved ones in the kitchen is just as important as crafting the perfect menu. Here are some essential cooking safety tips to keep in mind this Thanksgiving.

1. Safely Thaw Your Turkey

  • Always thaw your turkey in the refrigerator, cold water (changed every 30 minutes), or microwave. Never thaw it on the counter, as this can allow harmful bacteria to grow.
  • Plan ahead—refrigerator thawing takes about 24 hours for every 4-5 pounds of turkey.

2. Prevent Cross-Contamination

  • Use separate cutting boards and utensils for raw meats and ready-to-eat foods.
  • Wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds after handling raw poultry.
  • Sanitize countertops and kitchen tools to keep your prep space clean.

3. Cook Your Turkey Thoroughly

  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure your turkey reaches an internal temperature of 165°F in the thickest part of the breast and 175°F in the thigh.
  • Avoid relying on pop-up timers alone—they can sometimes be inaccurate.

4. Don’t Overload Your Oven or Stove

  • Overcrowding your cooking space can cause uneven cooking and increase the risk of fires.
  • Leave enough room for air circulation to avoid dangerous heat buildup.

5. Practice Fryer Safety

  • If deep-frying your turkey, do so outdoors, on a flat surface, and away from flammable materials.
  • Make sure the turkey is completely thawed and dry to prevent oil splashes and fires.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby, and never leave the fryer unattended.

6. Avoid Burns and Accidents

  • Use oven mitts when handling hot dishes, and turn pot handles inward to prevent spills.
  • Keep children and pets out of the kitchen to avoid accidents.

7. Store Leftovers Safely

  • Refrigerate leftovers within two hours of cooking to prevent bacteria growth.
  • Divide large portions into smaller, shallow containers for faster cooling.
  • Eat or freeze leftovers within 3-4 days.

Thanksgiving is a time to create wonderful memories, not kitchen mishaps. By following these tips, you can ensure a safe and happy holiday for everyone at your table.
