Ingredients

  • 10 cups whole wheat bread cubes
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup celery, chopped
  • 1 tsp dried parsley (or 1 Tbsp fresh parsley)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • Optional: 2 medium apples, chopped, or 1/4 cup raisins

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Place bread cubes in a large bowl.
  3. In a saucepan, cook onion, celery, parsley, salt, and pepper in water for 5 minutes. Pour over bread cubes.
  4. Stir in milk, egg, and optional apples or raisins.
  5. Spoon into a greased baking dish and bake for 1 hour.
