Celebrating the Women Who Paved the Way

On this International Women’s Day, we honor the incredible women who shaped the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank’s mission and made lasting contributions to our community. Their leadership, compassion, and dedication to service have impacted countless lives; today, we celebrate their legacy.

Marie Kunlo – Our first Executive Director, Marie led the food bank from 1982 with a heart full of compassion. She dedicated her life to serving children and families in need. In her honor, we created the Marie Kunlo Agency of the Year Award, ensuring her legacy of care continues.

Julia O'Connor—A devoted volunteer since the food bank’s early days in 1982, Julia and her husband, Joe, served for over 30 years. She believed in leading by example and inspiring generations with her hard work and selflessness.

Gladys Ferguson – A true advocate for community service, Gladys tirelessly volunteered to distribute food and personally ensured that families in need were supported. Even into her 80s, she remained active, championing food access for all.

Phyllis Howze – Alongside her husband Les, Phyllis championed the Food for Life program at Rehoboth United Methodist Church in 2005, ensuring seniors in Caroline County received nutritious food. What started with 35 neighbors now serves nearly 100 each month.

Oya OliverFrom volunteer to board member to serving as our Executive Director for 26 years, Oya transformed hunger relief in our region. She taught us that true service means “always treating people with dignity and respect.”

Today, we honor these remarkable women and all the women making a difference in the fight against hunger. Your dedication and leadership continue to inspire us!
