In honor of National Eat Your Veggies Day, get your hands dirty and grow these 5 vegetables that will help feed neighbors!
  1. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are incredibly versatile and come in many different varieties, all of which produce a steady supply of fruit. You can expect to harvest about 10 to 15 pounds of fruit per plant.
  2. Peppers
Just like tomatoes, peppers have a large variety - whether you love spice or milder flavors, there's a pepper for you! Peppers can be grown in containers or garden beds easily, just make sure you support the stalk as once plants start forming fruit they can become heavy, a single plant can turn out 3 to 4 pounds of peppers.
  3. Cucumbers
Cucumbers are bountiful producers and perfect for eating straight off the vine, pickling, or added to water for a refreshing taste. Be sure to pick your mature cucumbers from the plant as leaving them can stop the plant's production. You can expect to harvest about 2 to 3 pounds of fruit per plant.
  4. Greens
Many types of lettuces are a great option for fresh salads throughout the summer months. For fast-growing mixes, look for those containing leafy greens. Salad mixes are typically ready to harvest in about a month and can be harvested multiple times from one seeding.
  5. Squash
There are a plethora of squash varieties and like tomatoes, they have a long growing season. Squash needs to be planted in well-drained soil with consistent deep watering. You can expect to harvest about 5 to 25 pounds of fruit per plant, depending on the variety. Squash also grows well with cucumbers!
You can Grow A Row to help feed neighbors facing hunger or donate your excess produce to the food bank or a local food pantry. Your bounty, large or small, can help a family eat a well-balanced dinner. Happy gardening!
