For Families

Two jobs? Three jobs? How many does it take for a working family to be able to pay all of the bills and put dinner on the table? At the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank we see families where both parents work more than one job, but after "fixed" expenses such as rent and utilities have been paid, there is often not enough left over to pay for food. And if an unexpected bill comes along then everything is up in the air.

Pantry Distribution Program

The Fredericksburg Area Food Bank distributes millions of pounds of food to the hungry and working poor through our partner agency food pantries. The Pantry Distribution Program provides food assistance to the hungry of Planning District 16, the counties of Stafford, Spotsylvania, Caroline, King George and the City of Fredericksburg, as well as neighboring communities. The Food Bank is a resource for our partner faith-based and member non-profit organizations to obtain the food they need to help keep food resources readily available for distribution to the hungry.

USDA Commodity Distribution

The Fredericksburg Area Food Bank serves as a distribution point for government commodities that are made available on a monthly basis to income-eligible individuals through 16 certified USDA pantries throughout our communities. Rules for acceptance and participation in the program are the same for everyone without regard to race, color, national origin, age, sex, or handicap.

Mobile Pantry Program

Another challenge facing the area is rural hunger. Many of the rural communities served by the Food Bank have food insecurity rates well above 11 percent. This high rate of food insecurity is partially the cause of limited access to healthy food. The Fredericksburg Area Food Bank reaches many of these food-insecure families through our Mobile Pantry program. This program provides fresh and non-perishable food items for distribution to households living in the remote or underserved areas of each country. The Mobile Food Pantry rotates distribution between sites within our service area to help us attain our goal of a Hunger-Free community.
